Winthrop Names Bruce Polsky, MD Chairman of the Department of Medicine

Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce that Bruce Polsky, MD, MACP, FIDSA, has been appointed Chairman of the Department of Medicine.
“Dr. Polsky has distinguished himself with his extensive experience as a physician, educator and researcher, and we are pleased to welcome him to the Winthrop community,” said John F. Collins, President and CEO of Winthrop.
Dr. Polsky most recently served as Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s and Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospitals and as Professor of Medicine and Pathology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. During his tenure there, he also held the positions of Medical Director of the Clinical Virology Laboratory, Hospital Epidemiologist, and Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases, serving as the John H. Keating Sr. Professor of Medicine at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Dr. Polsky is a Master of the American College of Physicians, and a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the New York Academy of Medicine. A graduate of the University of Michigan and Wayne State University School of Medicine, he has been named to the Castle Connolly Guides America’s Top Doctorsand America’s Top Doctors for Cancer on an annual basis for over a decade.
Dr. Polsky has been an active clinical investigator of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and other viral infections since the early 1980s. He has also performed research on anti-infective therapy drug development, including antivirals, antifungals and antibacterial agents, as well as clinical diagnostic platforms for infectious diseases.
Dr. Polsky is currently Vice-Chair of the Study Monitoring Committee of the Hepatitis Transformational Science Group of the Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Group, funded by the National Institutes of Health – National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, and is past Chair of the Publications Committee of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Dr. Polsky has published extensively on antiviral drug development and on infectious complications in the immunocompromised host – particularly with regards to cancer and AIDS.
Dr. Polsky resides in Manhattan and Springs, Long Island, with his wife, Catharine.
